Handbook states "There are no educational prerequisites or requirements for taking the exam. All age-eligible applicants with a high school diploma are encouraged to register." CPR requirement may be met with BLS or EMT card; current CPR card must be shown on exam day (photocopy acceptable, digital not accepted). Exam must be taken within 90 days of purchase/receiving eligibility ID.

One exam attempt per purchase; candidates who fail may purchase a $199 retest 30 days from the date of the exam. Extensions/retakes grant an additional 90 days; total extensions/reschedules/retakes not granted beyond 12 months, after which a new registration fee is required.

Deadline rule
Certification valid 4 years; submit recertification application within 90 days of the expiration date and preferably before expiration. Late fees apply if submitted after expiration; after 90 days past expiration, renewal is forfeited. Renewal extends certification 4 years from the previous expiration date.

Renewal requires 4.0 CEUs (40 hours) completed within the four-year period, proof of attendance/official transcripts for college coursework, and the online Recertification Application with payment. CEUs must come from NESTA/Spencer Institute/other NESTA divisions or the NESTA Approved Providers list; other coursework must be approved via a CEU Petition before it can be used. Late fees by days past expiration: 1-30 days $25, 31-60 days $50, 61-90 days $95.
