Group Exercise Instructor candidates must hold valid adult CPR certification from a nationally recognized provider (e.g., ARC, AHA, ASHI, NSC) that includes a live hands-on practical skills evaluation (fully online CPR not accepted); documentation (copy of card front & back or certificate) must be submitted to NETA prior to the exam. Signed Candidate Compliance Statement and registration form required. (AED is required only for the Personal Trainer credential.)

No purchase of NETA study materials or attendance at a review workshop is required to be eligible to sit for the exam. NETA recommends 30–45 days of self-guided study. Computer-based exams must be scheduled and completed within one year of registration.

Deadline rule
Certification valid 2 years from date of issue; renewal applications accepted up to 90 days before (not earlier than) the designated expiration date. NETA advises submitting ~2 months (at least 30 days) prior to expiration. Automatic 180-day reinstatement grace period after expiration with higher fees; beyond 180 days the exam must be retaken. Upon renewal the new expiration is 2 years from the previous expiration date.

20 CECs must be earned between date of issue and designated expiration date; at least 6 of the 20 must come directly from NETA workshops, home study courses, or online modules. Excess CECs cannot be carried over. CECs from a specific course may only be applied once per credential; the 6 CECs granted for attending the GEI certification review workshop cannot be applied toward renewal of the GEI certification. Group Exercise Instructors must submit a copy (front and back) of a valid adult CPR certification from a recognized provider (e.g., AHA, ARC, ASHI, NSC) that included a live hands-on practical skills evaluation and is valid on/after the renewal date; fully online CPR courses are not accepted and CPR/AED courses award no CECs. A NETA-CB Professional Code of Ethics exists (including maintaining current CPR), but no ethics course/CEC is required at renewal. All CE activities must be beyond entry level and within the exercise professional scope of practice.

  • NETA Certification Board (non-preapproved providers / college courses) — petition accepted
    Activities not pre-approved by NETA, ACE, AFAA, or NASM may be petitioned with a $25 non-refundable fee per course plus documentation; health/fitness college courses with grade C or higher awarded 5 NETA CECs per credit; other activities 1 CEC per contact hour; excluded topics include massage therapy, diagnosing, counseling, chiropractic/PT techniques
