Valid adult CPR and AED certification from a nationally recognized provider (e.g., ARC, AHA, ASHI, NSC) that includes a live hands-on practical skills evaluation; documentation (copy of card front & back or certificate) must be submitted to NETA prior to the exam. Online-only CPR/AED certifications not accepted. Signed Candidate Compliance Statement required with registration.

No purchase of study materials or attendance at a review workshop is required to sit for the exam. NETA recommends 30–45 days of self-guided study. If the candidate passes but lacks CPR/AED documentation, certification is held until documentation is provided.

Deadline rule
Certification is valid two years from date of issue; 20 CECs must be earned between date of issue and the designated expiration date. Applications accepted up to 90 days before expiration (NETA advises submitting ~30-60 days prior). Automatic 180-day reinstatement grace period after expiration (status is 'expired'); beyond 180 days the exam must be retaken. Renewed certifications are dated two years from the previous expiration date.

At least 6 of the 20 CECs must come from NETA workshops or NETA home study courses. Excess CECs cannot be carried over to a future cycle. CECs from a specific course may be applied only once toward renewal of a given credential. CECs granted for attending the Personal Trainer certification review workshop (14 CECs) cannot be applied toward renewal of the Personal Trainer certification. Adult CPR/AED certification with a live hands-on practical skills evaluation is required and must be valid on/after the renewal date; CPR/AED courses award no CECs. Non-approved activities require a CE Petition Application with a $25 non-refundable fee per course; health/fitness college courses with grade C or higher earn 5 NETA CECs per credit.

CEU recognition

  • American Council on Exercise (ACE) — accepts ceus from
    Automatically accepted; 0.10 ACE CEC = 1.0 NETA CEC. If an activity is approved for both NETA and ACE credit, only the NETA CECs may be applied.
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) — accepts ceus from
    Automatically accepted; 0.10 NASM CEU = 1.0 NETA CEC.
  • Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) — accepts ceus from
    Automatically accepted; 0.10 AFAA CEU = 1.0 NETA CEC.
  • National Exercise Trainers Association Certification Board (NETA-CB) — petition accepted
    Coursework/activities not pre-approved for NETA, ACE, AFAA, or NASM credit may be petitioned with a CE Petition Application, supporting documentation, and a $25 fee per course; instructor must hold a bachelor's degree in a health/fitness field or a current NCCA-accredited fitness certification. Out-of-scope topics (e.g., massage therapy, kinesio taping, chiropractic/PT techniques) not awarded CECs.
