Deadline rule
Fixed four-year certification cycles running January 1 – December 31 (cycle 2022-01-01 through 2025-12-31; new 4-year cycle began January 1, 2026). Compliance is reviewed at cycle end (review conducted in January following cycle close).

Maintenance is activity-based, not CEU-based: a national referee must serve as a scoring table official, technical controller, platform referee, or jury member for a full session at four (4) regional, national, and/or pro events per four-year cycle (prorated for those certified mid-cycle: 2 events for those certified 2022-2023, 1 event for 2024, automatic recertification for 2025 certifications). National referees who fail these requirements lose national rank and are reduced to state referee (if state requirements are met), and must re-start the entire national exam process to regain rank. Ongoing service as a referee at any event also requires current USA Powerlifting membership, SafeSport completion, and a background check on file with the National Office. Any referee inactive for 4 years (48 months) is moved to 'inactive' status and must petition the Technical Committee in writing (compelling reason plus justification for rank) for reinstatement, subject to Technical Committee recommendation and presidential approval, possibly at a lower rank or with re-testing.
