ACSM-CPT vs NETA-CGEI
ACSM Certified Personal Trainer from American College of Sports Medicine and NETA Group Exercise Instructor Certification from National Exercise Trainers Association, side by side: accreditation, eligibility, exam, cost and renewal, each fact from its cited source.
Key differences
- Both are accredited, but by different bodies: ACSM-CPT by NCCA, NETA-CGEI by National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
- ACSM-CPT renews on a 3-year cycle; NETA-CGEI on a 2-year cycle.
- ACSM-CPT requires 45 continuing-education units per cycle versus 20 for NETA-CGEI — note the providers use different CEU unit systems, so these figures are not directly comparable.
- The renewal fee differs: $60 for ACSM-CPT versus $75 for NETA-CGEI.

Renewal deadline rule
Certification valid 3 years. Certificants certified prior to 2025 expire Dec 31; those newly certified in 2025 expire three years from date of initial certification. Recertification must be completed by 11:59 p.m. EST on the expiration date to avoid the $80 late fee; an automatic six-month grace period follows (certification inactive during grace period), after which the credential lapses and only reinstatement ($225) or re-examination is available.
Certification valid 2 years from date of issue; renewal applications accepted up to 90 days before (not earlier than) the designated expiration date. NETA advises submitting ~2 months (at least 30 days) prior to expiration. Automatic 180-day reinstatement grace period after expiration with higher fees; beyond 180 days the exam must be retaken. Upon renewal the new expiration is 2 years from the previous expiration date.
