AFAA-CGFI vs NFPT-CPT

AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor from Athletics and Fitness Association of America and NFPT Certified Personal Trainer from National Federation of Professional Trainers, side by side: accreditation, eligibility, exam, cost and renewal, each fact from its cited source.

Key differences

  • Both are accredited, but by different bodies: AFAA-CGFI by NCCA, NFPT-CPT by National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • AFAA-CGFI requires current CPR/AED certification to enroll; NFPT-CPT does not.
  • AFAA-CGFI renews on a 2-year cycle; NFPT-CPT on a 1-year cycle.
  • AFAA-CGFI requires 1.5 continuing-education units per cycle versus 2 for NFPT-CPT — note the providers use different CEU unit systems, so these figures are not directly comparable.
  • The renewal fee differs: $99 for AFAA-CGFI versus $85 for NFPT-CPT.
  • AFAA-CGFI requires current CPR/AED at renewal; NFPT-CPT does not.

Differences are stated only where both credentials have a known value on record — never inferred against an unknown. No winner is declared; which credential fits depends on your goals. Methodology

Renewal deadline rule
All requirements must be met by the certification expiration date (materials mailed/submitted prior to expiration). Recertification applications may be submitted up to one year late provided all continuing education was completed before or within 90 days of the expiration date; late fees apply ($30 up to 90 days post-expiration, $50 after the grace period and before one year post-expiration).
Annual renewal by the certificate expiration date (standardized to the first day of a month: exams taken on the 1st-14th expire the 1st of that anniversary month; 15th-end of month roll forward to the 1st of the following month). Automated renewal notices begin 60 days before expiration. Credential becomes 'Inactive' immediately at expiration, with a two-year grace period to renew (submitting 2.0 CECs and the renewal fee per lapsed year); after two years the credential is 'Expired' and full reapplication/retesting is required. Late payment does not extend the anniversary date. Effective January 1, 2027, the grace period for new renewals drops to 30 days, and legacy two-year grace periods all end December 31, 2028.
