NCSF-CPT vs NETA-CPT

NCSF Certified Personal Trainer from National Council on Strength & Fitness and NETA Personal Trainer Certification from National Exercise Trainers Association, side by side: accreditation, eligibility, exam, cost and renewal, each fact from its cited source.

Key differences

  • Both are accredited, but by different bodies: NCSF-CPT by NCCA, NETA-CPT by National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • NETA-CPT requires current CPR/AED certification to enroll; NCSF-CPT does not.
  • The exam fee differs: $349 for NCSF-CPT versus $449 for NETA-CPT.
  • NCSF-CPT requires 10 continuing-education units per cycle versus 20 for NETA-CPT — note the providers use different CEU unit systems, so these figures are not directly comparable.
  • The renewal fee differs: $85 for NCSF-CPT versus $75 for NETA-CPT.
  • NCSF-CPT carries an ethics requirement at renewal; NETA-CPT does not.
  • Both renew on a 2-year cycle.

Differences are stated only where both credentials have a known value on record — never inferred against an unknown. No winner is declared; which credential fits depends on your goals. Methodology

Two-year certification period begins the day you pass the NCSF exam and ends on the last day of the month in which the certification began, 2 years later. All 10 CEUs must be earned during the most recent two-year period of active status; applications postmarked after the expiration date are not accepted.
Certification is valid two years from date of issue; 20 CECs must be earned between date of issue and the designated expiration date. Applications accepted up to 90 days before expiration (NETA advises submitting ~30-60 days prior). Automatic 180-day reinstatement grace period after expiration (status is 'expired'); beyond 180 days the exam must be retaken.
