NCSF-CPT vs NFPT-CPT
NCSF Certified Personal Trainer from National Council on Strength & Fitness and NFPT Certified Personal Trainer from National Federation of Professional Trainers, side by side: accreditation, eligibility, exam, cost and renewal, each fact from its cited source.
Key differences
- Both are accredited, but by different bodies: NCSF-CPT by NCCA, NFPT-CPT by National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
- NCSF-CPT renews on a 2-year cycle; NFPT-CPT on a 1-year cycle.
- NCSF-CPT requires 10 continuing-education units per cycle versus 2 for NFPT-CPT — note the providers use different CEU unit systems, so these figures are not directly comparable.
- NCSF-CPT carries an ethics requirement at renewal; NFPT-CPT does not.
- NCSF-CPT requires current CPR/AED at renewal; NFPT-CPT does not.
Differences are stated only where both credentials have a known value on record — never inferred against an unknown. No winner is declared; which credential fits depends on your goals. Methodology

Renewal deadline rule
Two-year certification period begins the day you pass the NCSF exam and ends on the last day of the month in which the certification began, 2 years later. All 10 CEUs must be earned during the most recent two-year period of active status; applications postmarked after the expiration date are not accepted.
Annual renewal by the certificate expiration date (standardized to the first day of a month: exams taken on the 1st-14th expire the 1st of that anniversary month; 15th-end of month roll forward to the 1st of the following month). Automated renewal notices begin 60 days before expiration. Credential becomes 'Inactive' immediately at expiration, with a two-year grace period to renew (submitting 2.0 CECs and the renewal fee per lapsed year); after two years the credential is 'Expired' and full reapplication/retesting is required. Late payment does not extend the anniversary date. Effective January 1, 2027, the grace period for new renewals drops to 30 days, and legacy two-year grace periods all end December 31, 2028.
