Deadline rule

Certificate is valid two years from date of issue; the 10 CECs must be earned between the date of issue and the designated expiration date. NETA advises mailing the renewal packet two months prior to expiration. An automatic 180-day reinstatement grace period follows expiration (status is 'expired'); if it lapses, the workshop/course must be retaken and the exam passed again.

Requires 10 NETA CECs per 2-year cycle, of which at least 6 must be earned from NETA workshops or home study courses purchased directly from NETA. Renewal packet: renewal application, photocopies of certificates of completion for all CECs, photocopy of adult CPR/AED card (front and back) from a recognized provider (e.g., AHA, ARC, ASHI, NSC) that included a live hands-on practical skills evaluation (online-only not accepted), and the renewal fee. CPR/AED courses do not award NETA CECs. CPR/AED not required to earn the credential but required to renew it. Excess CECs beyond 10 do not carry over. The specialty workshop itself awards 8 NETA CECs and costs $299.

CEU recognition

American Council on Exercise (ACE) — accepts ceus from
NETA automatically accepts ACE-approved CECs; 0.10 ACE CEC = 1.0 NETA CEC. Certificate of completion with name, activity, date, credits and provider/course number required.
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) — accepts ceus from
NETA automatically accepts NASM-approved CEUs; 0.10 NASM CEU = 1.0 NETA CEC.
Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) — accepts ceus from
NETA automatically accepts AFAA-approved CEUs; 0.10 AFAA CEU = 1.0 NETA CEC.
National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) — petition accepted
Coursework/CE activities not pre-approved by NETA, ACE, AFAA or NASM may be petitioned via CE Petition Application with supporting documentation and a $25.00 petition fee per course; health/fitness college courses with grade of 'C' or higher evaluated case-by-case.
